La Coupole
Symbol of Nazi destructive madness, the gigantic dome of Helfaut, a 55,000-tonne monster, is one of the most impressive remnants of World War II. In 1997, this singular place converted into the Second World War Museum of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region. The diversity of the museography content, the relevance and the contemporary character of the discourse on display, make this place of remembrance a major historical centre that goes far beyond its primary function as a museum. "The work of memory, far from being a post-modern approach, is a civic necessity.
However, the current staging of the permanent exhibition spaces does not make sense. Thick walls reinforce the compartmentalisation; it cancels out the visibility of the dome and prevents clarity in the discourse. The abusive use of sets, sometimes cumbersome, disrupts the strength and diversity of the visuals presented, whether static or animated. It seems pertinent to us to review the layout of all the exhibition spaces, giving priority to the visibility and clarity of the route to be entirely in line with the spirit of the museological content.
