The Gallery of Galleries
We contact us to consider the rehabilitation of a 400 m² art gallery within the Lafayette Galleries. The particularity of the space lies essentially in its connections to the outside. Two different entrances lead to the place: one from the Galleries, the other directly from the street. The area also has an outward-facing façade with horizontal windows.
Our intervention is explicit. We give a specific identity to the connections to the outside, which we plunge into brilliant black. We treat them rather as 'spaces of disconnection'.
A black tunnel connects the gallery to the galleries. Directly from the street, a black hose twists its way to the gallery: a black façade (containing cannons of light and bookshop's storage) slips-in as a gap between outside and inside. This façade offers a fragmented view of the urban landscape.
The space of the exhibition is an almost abstract white box. The floor, a glossy white resin, creates a floating feeling. The vertical walls are painted in matt white and are used as hanging supports. Only the ceiling reveals its material. An army of flexible white and translucent tubes overhang the space by undulating slightly.
