Verviers Fine Arts and Ceramics Museum
Dare to demolish
The project to restore the Hôtel de Biolley began by a selected demolition of all the buildings and additions carried out for speculative reasons in the 20th century. The Fine Arts section was initially to be located in the existing body shop building, but for the above-mentioned reasons, we preferred to place it in a new location at the end of the available land. A courtyard is formed thanks to this new building. By removing the annexes attached to the hôtel, the rear façade is enhanced, and finds an echo in the new building, which sets up a formal and stylistic dialogue with the listed building through its plan, dimensions and façade. The space connecting the new and old buildings includes the public entrance, the lift and a good deal of vertical circulation. Placing public access areas in this space means that maintenance of the historic building can be limited, but also gives visitors an access to the museum, which can be discovered one part at a time: the hôtel porch, the redeveloped courtyard, the modern building and, as an echo, the rear facade of the hôtel all appear to their advantage as a result.
