The Jazz Century
For the first time at the Musée du Quai Branly, an exhibition has occupied the entire 2,000 m2 of the temporary exhibition space, opening fully onto the museum garden and so establishing a strong dialogue between the exterior and the interior. The exhibition presents works of art and documents that chronologically show the relationships between jazz and the graphic arts throughout the 20th century. The interplay of correspondences is organised through two scenographic universes: ten time-themed spaces grafted along a timeline and a chronological diagonal line that ‘slices’ through the spaces as a whole. The time-theme ‘pockets’, connected to the timeline, define a kind of exploded labyrinth and open the perspective so that one’s gaze can escape into the distance. Lastly, all the spaces are bathed in diffused light from the ‘stalactites’ suspended from the ceiling.
