Paris 13th - Islands of desire
A landscape marked by the horizon
The Villette basin is a site marked by a soothing horizontality. The canal and the quay are at the same level. The water seems to be tamed there. The two materials, mineral and water, form a couple, continuously huddled together. The passer-by feels like extending his walk on the water. The bank opposite seems both so far and so close.
An existing urban development well invested
The layout of the central median bordering the quay is straightforward. It is a succession of tree-lined walkways and empty spaces allowing for the development of numerous activities for the inhabitants of the neighbourhood. It is a highly structured site with real, local uses.
We are investing space in the water space on the water.
Developing Paris-Plage on the Bassin de la Villette is an opportunity to "walk on water". The scenographic proposal produces a series of floating stages that we have called "the islands of desire" in homage to Wim Wenders. The whole creates a succession of islands bordered by aquatic plants and accessible by floating wooden pontoons. These accesses can be closed at night.
19th century Paris - History of shadows
The large scale of the 'Port de la Gare''s site.
The Seine is broader, and the quays are less steep than on the historic site. The extensive library imposes itself by its towers and its monumental staircase visible from the banks of the Seine. The circulation axis Quai de la Gare-François Mauriac is very present. One can hear perfectly the circulation of the expressway on the other side of the Seine. The wall of the park of Bercy reflects the noise of cars.
Last year's experience has shown that a classical layout, in the spirit of the historic site, cannot work well. The analysis of the site and the previous experience lead us to propose a structuring scenography, whose scale of elements is proportional to those of the site. It also leads us to diversify the layout by creating protected and internalized areas so that one can isolate oneself from the external agitation.
A dry and mineral site
On hot days, the site is repulsive. It is hugely mineral, and there is no shade. It is then necessary to create shaded areas, humidity and a healthy landscape presence. It is essential to propose an urban scenography with a strong identity. In addition to the classic activities of Paris-Plage, this place must offer original and remarkable atmospheres. That is to say diversified activities in resonance with architecture-specific to this site.
