Restructuring of the old control tower of the airport Tempelhof in Berlin into a cultural center
The Tempelhof control tower
Special mention - ranked 3rd/15
Tempelhof Airport is a symbol. Its history and that of Berlin are inseparably linked, having both been marked by major events in the 20th century. It is also an archetype in terms of architectural design. The forthcoming reopening of the former control tower will mark a new stage in the reappropriation of this Berlin monument. Entering the building, the original structure of the concrete arcades will reappear. This intervention, while increasing transparency and luminosity, will also improve the circulation of visitors to the 6th floor, which houses the exhibition space, the café and the gift shop, and then to the terrace where a panorama of the city awaits them. In order to create a strong link between the different levels, we have brought back a unique material on the flights and landings of stairs as well as on the floor of the terrace. In the evening, thanks to integrated lighting, the control tower will be visible from afar and will appear like a beacon to help people orient themselves in the city.
